"The Stakes" is Laugh-Out-Loud Funny. So let's laugh!

The new RNC fear piece that tries to make us piss our pants and vote Republican has rightly been compared to Lyndon Johnson's infamous 1964 "Daisy Ad" in which a little girl counts flower petals, little suspecting that the Russians are about to drop a bomb on her (so whatever you do, don't vote for Goldwater!).

Our response should be modeled after another famous ad from four years later, in which the words "Spiro Agnew for Vice President?" appear on a television screen to a voice-over of hysterical laughter.

The idea that the Republicans can keep us safe from terrorism is laugh-out-loud funny. That's our response. Just a still shot from the asinine RNC ad on a TV screen, laughter, and the words (also from the 1968 Humphrey ad):

"This would be funny
If it weren't so serious..."

just one porblem with your idea. The "Agnew laugh-track" ad didn't work.
Who won the 1968 Presidential election?

Dear Spirowasright,

The ad did work. LBJ was as unpopular in 1968 as Bush is now. Viet Nam was as unpopular as Iraq is now. It's pretty frickin' amazing Humphrey was able to make it as close as he did. Widespread and justified disdain for your apparent idol, Mr. Agnew, was a big part of the reason.

Johnson's daisy commercial can more properly be characterized as famous, rather than infamous.  It ran just once, at the conclusion of the network showing of "Dr. Strangelove" and was devastatingly effective (and dead on accurate).  This is child's play compared to the LBJ ad (which I vividly remember seeing as a 13 year old).

This ad does stir up a little fear but it doesn't hold throughout the commercial, never miond to the voting booth.  Bush and his cheap-o grandiosity let Osama get away.  He botched it.  He got us into a totally unneeded war.  He botched Katrina.

With all this hype around the ad, I'm still confused -- I just don't see how this benefits the Republicans at all, since the majority of Americans trust Dems more on all the issues, including the so-called war on terror, no?

Fear mongering has worked for the past 5 years, but I don't think it works any more -- after all, these are the guys who HAVEN'T captured Bin Laden, and who have made Iraq into a complete mess.  I really think the public is aware of this by now.

I don't know ... if anything, I could see this helping a bit with the extreme Repub base, but also hurting them with independents who are wondering that the f--- these jokers have been doing for the past 5 years.
