Kerry Takes Another Stupid Pill...

It appears that our former presidential nominee really is as stupid as the Republicans say. The latest? According to Lois Romano at the Washington Post:

The senator from Massachusetts and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, sent out 75,000 Christmas cards with pictures of trees at each season. The Kerrys gushed over their "gratitude for the beauty of these trees and the life they represent."

But it didn't end there.

The card came in an odd-looking envelope, one of those with a return-mail flap and instructions to send it to . . . well, to a recycling company, so "it can be made into new carpet tile."

Carpet tile?

We want a "world without waste . . . where every product either returns safely to the soil or becomes a new product."

So the card instructs: "1. Remove this panel and insert it along with the card into the envelope. 2. Expose adhesive strip and fold the flap over to seal the envelope. 3. Drop this mailer into any U.S. mailbox."

Who else would send a Christmas card with a to-do list?

From a purely environmentalist perspective, this is about the stupidest thing I have ever seen. br>

  • Most people won't bother to send it back, so the extra paper used to produce the extra envelopes will more than outweigh (literally) the paper actually recycled from the mailbacks;
  • Assuming anyone actually does send the things, whatever environmental good is done by the recycling will be more than offset by the additional fuel used to transport them;
  • The thousands of dollars they will spend on these things could have gone to a cause that actually did more good than harm.
  • And of course, if you really want to save trees (wait for it)

  • HOW ABOUT NOT SENDING OUT 75 FRAKKIN' THOUSAND CHRISTMAS CARDS?????

    Long story short -- they should have just used recycled paper and asked the recipients to recycle them at home.

    Duh!!!

    Where do we find these people?

    Update: I have this crossposted at DailyKos, where it is getting flamed, so let me add the updated I inserted there: UPDATE: I am not a troll. And I am not usually one to go in for criticizing our own. I also believed Kerry's "botched joke" explanation, but still think he was incredibly stupid for saying it the way he did. We have some very strong candidates for 2008 -- Obama, Edwards, Clark and others. Let's just make sure that Senator Stupid gets the support he deserves here, which is absolutely none! I might actually ask with some justification whether all you folks ripping me a new one are trolls yourselves. Have a nice day!

    Any story that starts with the words "John Kerry" elicits immediate laughter from me.  This one included.

    I agree - a very stupid idea. Of course, as a Jew, I could somewhat correctly be accused of hating Christmas and everything associated with it. ;) Good thing I'm not a politician.

    Um, except I'm a lifelong loyal Democrat, which is kind of, you know, the opposite of trolling. I held my nose and voted for Kerry once. I believe I'm allowed to try to influence the 2008 nomination without being accused of being a troll.

    Re: Kerry Takes Another Stupid Pill... (none / 0)

    Umm, how do you know the cards WEREN'T printed on recycled paper, making this a third or fourth or more use of the materials (and eliminating your whine about saving trees)? Do you honestly think a company that is so eco-friendly that it goes to the trouble of arranging to have the cards repurposed into something else WOULDN'T use recycled/eco-friendly materials? Think about it.

    And if you read it more clearly, you'd see that there weren't "extra" envelopes, you sent the card back IN THE SAME ENVELOPE IN WHICH IT CAME TO YOU. Repurposing, you know.

    As for the cost of sending out those cards, instead of donating the money directly to a charity, I challenge you to find anyone who makes cards like this that ISN'T ALREADY an environmental charity. The act of purchasing the cards was itself a donation, no doubt.

    Someone's being stupid about this, but it's not the Kerrys.

    Re: Kerry Takes Another Stupid Pill... (none / 0)

    If I got a Christmas card from John and Teresa Kerry, I'd hang onto it and I imagine most of the 75,000 who got one will do just that.

    Its something different.  The card I sent out this year had a little girl and a sled on it, a black and white photo that might have been myself as a child in the 50's, or my sister or sister-in-law.  Next year I'll send something different, a card that catches my eye and I think its special and I hope the people I send it to think its special, too.
